The Power of Praying in the Spirit

Ephesians 6:18 "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

Before this verse, Apostle Paul lists the Armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the Gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. But notice that he doesn’t stop there.

If the armor is our equipment, praying in the Spirit is our communication line.

Praying in the Spirit is what gives the believer the power to actually wear the armor effectively.

What Does it Mean to Pray "in the Spirit"?

Many people wonder if this refers exclusively to "praying in tongues." While that is certainly a biblical expression of it, praying in the Spirit is even broader. It means praying under the influence, guidance, and power of the Holy Spirit.

It’s an act of Alignment, by praying according to God's will, and asking the "Holy Spirit, what is on Your heart today?"

It’s Strength for the Weak: *Romans 8:26* tells us that when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with "groanings that cannot be expressed in words."

It’s a Partnership: It’s a divine collaboration. You provide the heart and the voice; the Spirit provides the direction and the fire.

Three Ways to Ignite Your Prayer Life Today

If you want to move from "routine prayer" to "Spirit-led prayer," try these three shifts:

1) Start with Silence: Before you speak, spend two minutes in silence. Ask, "Holy Spirit, lead this conversation." Listen for a name, a scripture, or a burden He might place on your heart.

2) Pray the Word: The Spirit and the Word are always in agreement. When you pray the promises of the Bible, you are naturally praying in the Spirit.

3) Stay "Alert": Paul mentions being "alert." Praying in the Spirit isn't just for your morning quiet time; it’s a daily act. It’s the way to pray for a coworker or a sudden peace.

When we pray in the Spirit, we stop praying small, selfish prayers and start praying " *Kingdom prayers* ." We begin to see people the way God sees them. We find ourselves praying for "all the Lord’s people" with a fervor we didn't know we had.

Don't worry about having the "perfect" words. The Holy Spirit is the greatest translator in the universe. He takes your sighs, your tears, and your thoughts and turns them into a perfect fragrance before the throne of God.
