The Law of Reflection
Seeing the World Through the Golden Rule
In the world of physics, the Law of Reflection is simple: the angle at which light hits a surface is the same angle at which it bounces off. If you shine a light into a mirror, what comes back to you is a perfect representation of what you sent out.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus introduced a spiritual version of this law—one that doesn’t just govern light, but governs the human heart.
"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." — Matthew 7:12
1. *It’s a Proactive Law*
Most "rules" in the ancient world were phrased negatively: "Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you." It was a philosophy of avoidance—don't hit, don't steal, don't lie.
But Jesus flipped the script. He made it proactive. The Law of Reflection isn’t about what you don't do; it’s about what you initiate.
If you want to be encouraged, be the first to offer a kind word.
If you want to be forgiven, be the first to drop the grudge.
If you want to be seen, be the first to look for the person standing in the corner.
2. *The Mirror Effect*
Our relationships often act as mirrors. When we approach others with suspicion, they tend to reflect suspicion back. When we approach with generosity and warmth, we often find that the "angle of reflection" returns that same warmth to us.
Of course, the world is broken, and sometimes we reflect kindness only to receive coldness. However, the Golden Rule isn't a transaction; it's a transformation. By choosing to "do unto others" first, we stop being victims of our environment and start becoming architects of it.
3. *The "Summary" of the Story*
Jesus says this one sentence "sums up the Law and the Prophets." Imagine that! Thousands of years of tradition, hundreds of complex laws, and the fiery sermons of the prophets all distilled into one simple, actionable principle.
If we ever find ourselves confused about God’s will in a specific situation, we can simply look in the "mirror" of *Matthew 7:12* . Ask yourself: If I were in their shoes right now, what would I hope someone would do for me?
4. *Reflecting the Original Source*
The only reason we can reflect light is because a Light exists to begin with. We aren't the source of the kindness; we are the mirrors. We reflect the "Double Portion" of grace God has already poured into our lives.
When we live out the Law of Reflection, we aren't just being "nice people." We are reflecting the character of a Creator who loved us first, served us first, and sacrificed for us first.
*Putting it into Practice* :
This week, try an experiment. Identify one area where you feel "lacking"—maybe it’s appreciation at work or patience at home. Instead of waiting for it to come to you, reflect it first. Give the very thing you wish you were receiving.
Watch what happens when the angle of your life changes.
